What is Public History? A Brief Introduction

One goal of the CIC Legacies of American Slavery initiative is to expand and elevate public discussions about the history and impact of slavery, using the critical tools and insights of public history. In this clip, historian Cynthia R. Copeland offers a brief introduction to public history as a practice and a form of community engagement.

Copeland has directed or advised public history, historic preservation, and museum projects for more than two decades. In addition to teaching at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development she is president of the Institute for the Exploration of Seneca Village History and co-chair of the Reparations Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. In 2022 and 2023 she led intensive public history institutes at Yale University for project teams that included faculty and staff from CIC member institutions and representatives from community-based partners.
