Do colleges run the risk of losing donors if they embrace an honest reckoning with race? Perhaps—but Leslie Harris (Northwestern University) argues that forward-looking institutions are much more likely to gain the trust of their students and communities by being forthright about past wrongs. Harris is Professor of History and African American Studies at Northwestern University and co-editor of “Slavery and the University: Histories and Legacies” (University of Georgia Press, 2019). This conversation was recorded in April 2021 as part of CIC’s “Legacies of American Slavery: Reckoning with the Past” initiative.
